Video Designer: dance & choir (Purcell)

Conductor Maura Tuffy approached me about collaborating on a dance+choir project. Given covid-19 limitations and precautions, our choreographer and dancer, Madison Vomastek, recorded in NYC, while we filmed outdoors downtown New Haven, CT.

The project imagines a retelling of Purcell's baroque anthem "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and puts it in conversation with the dance medium. Both the human voice and dance are expressions that emerge from our physical bodies. This text and plea from 300+ years ago feels real to me today - an invocation to be heard and understood amidst suffering. Seeing voices contained by masks, a reminder of our reality, but also how much our minds and souls need to express themselves through art.
