Projection Designer: Live-Reacting Visuals to Flute
As part of Mark Coniglio's workshop here at Yale University with student projection designers and directors, I was able to explore something I've been curious about for quite some time: creating an environment where a performer is in control of the visual material with their live sound.
Maeli Goren kindly brought her flute to experiment. Size, color, and the appearance/number of threads was linked to frequencies of her sound, as well as volume/decibel level. No cues, no video files, just some fun experimenting. Of course, Isadora makes for a fantastic platform for this sort of work - and I am so thankful for Mark's willingness to help!
An excerpt of this experiment, with Debussy's composition "Syrinx", is found in the video below.
