Organized & Designed: Digital Opera Scenes (DAX 2017)
As part of the Digital Arts Expo organized by Dartmouth, I created visual content and directed/presented two 'digital' opera scenes, which included segments from Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" and Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel" with original animations and projection mapping using the space/atrium of the Black Family Visual Arts Center.
The singers I casted were undergraduate students of Dartmouth College, and I am very thankful for the help of Louis Burkot (vocal coach & staging) and Noriko Yasuda (accompanist).
About the event, as described in this article: “DAX is a cross-departmental showcase of original art, design, and innovation by Dartmouth students,” says Professor Michael Casey, chair of the Department of Music and faculty coordinator for DAX 2017. “Submissions represent more than 20 courses from departments across the campus, and include genres as diverse as opera and virtual reality.”DAX highlights the creativity and innovation that happen when art and technology meet, Casey says. Other featured works include design, digital drawing, digital performance, projection, photography, architecture, interactive installation, and visualization.
Some setup images of the mapping I did using Isadora are shown below. From the moment I saw this space (visual arts classroom building), I fell in love with the stairs and white space below it and beside it - the mapping allows the performers to use the platform and stairs and be surrounded by the visual animation.... Bringing opera to a public, space, and audience that is not used to it!
